A Popular Phrase We All Use That Holds Us Back

On several occasions in the past, I’ve had friends and family members admire accomplishments that I’ve made which I don’t give myself credit for (e.g. finishing my Masters, going for my PhD, changing careers, etc.).  They were just not a big deal to me.  Reason being; the things that I want to do, I do it. It holds no weight in my book.  In my mind they were effortless; like breathing.

Unfortunately, if it’s something that I don’t think I can  achieve, if I don’t think I’m good enough, or if I think it’s out of my league; then I let that mindset define me.  This is the definition of inadequacy. Inadequacy is the gateway to stagnation. Which means when we feel inadequate we are less likely to accomplish our goals, go after our dreams, and are less likely to take risks. But when we feel that we aren’t capable or worthy we remain constant. And when we feel like we aren’t progressing in life it affects how, and what we think and feel about ourselves. <—-those are HARD facts!!

Instead of holding ourselves accountable for these thoughts, we blame outside sources.  For example, I didn’t get the job I wanted; we think “I’m not good enough!” I didn’t get accepted into graduate school; we think “I’m not good enough!” I’ve been rejected by a loved one, friend, or family member; we think “I’m not good enough!” We avoid certain projects because we just can’t do it; we think “I’m not good enough!” They say I’m not good enough; so we think “I’m not good enough!

It’s time for us to take responsibility.  These factors should not define us but we let it.  The outcome of any given situation shouldn’t define us but we let it.  What others think of us shouldn’t define us but sometimes we let them. We allow it to affect our self-worth so much so that we give up and suppress our own potential.  I hear this statement all the time “not everyone is meant to be great.” So does that mean you aren’t meant to be great? Who placed you in the “everyone” category, society or yourself?  Let’s think about that for a minute.

We are ALL meant for greatness.  I think it’s our birth right. I don’t believe we were created for half of us to be less than and the other half to be greater than.  I believe it’s a man-made excuse for some of us to take the easy way out of working towards our full potential. It happens to the best of us and unfortunately, it has worked!

It’s time to start speaking greatness into existence, and declare your independence—your truth that defines you. Eleanor Roosevelt said “do one thing every day that scares you.”  So start taking some risks.  Remember that we put these limitations on ourselves so take the responsibility and make the necessary changes. Besides, owning our flaws makes us brave and bravery is a sign of courage.  Start Replacing I’M NOT’s with I AM’s and watch your potential unfold.

We have to remember to declare these affirmations on a daily basis:

We ARE good enough

We ARE  intelligent

We ARE creative

We ARE risk takers

We ARE capable

We ARE self-starters
