WEDNESDAY WINS: Seven Things You Can Start Doing This Week To Improve Your Self-care Habits

Starting this week I plan on posting seven steps you can take to incorporate self-care in your daily routine. These post will also be a weekly self-care challenge. Which means I’m challenging us to do one of the self-care options each day of the week until the following Wednesday or you can do all seven in one day.

SEVEN STEPS TO SELF-CARE:

1). GO TO BED AN HOUR EARLIER—I’m currently working on this. Our body and mind needs sleep so we can re-charge for the next day. Going to bed an hour earlier gives you the opportunity to wake up earlier to accomplish a little more the next day. Maybe you have a side hustle in addition to your full-time gig. An extra hour means you have more time to devote to activities that matters the most to you.

2). LESS SCREEN TIME—I am also working on this. My phone might as well be attached to my hand. It’s so easy to get lost in apps, social media, websites, emails, text, etc. which means we miss out on what’s going on in real time…in real life. Take a break from all electronic devices and take a walk, spend time with family or just sit in silence.

3). THREE MINUTE SCALP MASSAGE—Three minutes is just the number that I put on it but scalp massages are not only relaxing but they help circulate blood to your hair follicles which aids in hair growth. I just purchased this scalp massager from Amazon. I also massage my scalp with oils. Some examples of oils you can use are jojoba, olive oil, peppermint, tea tree, jamaican black castor oil, coconut oil, etc. Please keep in mind that everyones hair and scalp conditions differ so do your research before using oils when massaging your scalp and if necessary consult with your primary care physician.

4). DRINK A LITTLE MORE WATER—Our body is made up of about 60% water so this one is a no brainer. Drinking plenty of water aids in weight loss, it flushes toxins from our bodies, and it clears up our skin. I drink about a half gallon a day. I purchased this bottle from Amazon. The best part is, it comes in a variety of colors.

5). READ AT LEAST ONE CHAPTER OF YOUR BOOK EACH NIGHT—I’m currently reading two books right now. How to Be an Anti-Racist by Imbram X. Kendi and When You’re Falling Dive: Lessons in the Art of Living by Mark Matousek. If you’re not reading any books now is the time to start. Reading expands our mind and knowledge and it gives us the opportunity to participate in difficult and mind stimulating conversations.

6). JOURNALING—It’s therapeutic. Especially if it’s difficult for you to open up and talk about your problems. Journals are easily our best friends, you can share without the fear of judgement. It’s a healthy way to express how we feel without the worry of harming, hurting or being judged.

7). AFFIRMATIONS—Such a powerful tool. Affirmations are one of the main ingredients of the law of attraction. Everything that we think and say is embedded in the universe, whether it’s positive or negative so I encourage you to start each day with a positive affirmation and if you need to, repeat it several times a day until you start to believe it. If you’re always thinking and spitting negative thoughts put a twist on it. “I suck” can be changed to “I’ve made a lot of mistakes lately but there’s a lesson in all of life’s challenges.”

Let’s chat! How many of the steps did you add to your routine this week (or day)? Drop me a line or two.

I have a long history with mental illness. Overcoming depression made me realize my own resilience. It also made it clear that I wasn’t taking care of myself. I believe that in order for us to fully engage with ourselves and others we have to make time for self-love through our self-care habits. My goal with this blog is to encourage women in my age group to make time for self-care daily.
